John Simmons ca. 2015.
John’s first exposure to building began in his early childhood on his father’s jobsites where he would take chunks of scrap wood and erect mini houses. By thirteen, he was on his father’s payroll creating parts for closet systems and cabinets and continued to work in his father’s shop throughout high school. By 19, he secured his first cabinet contract and was working in his uncles’ cabinet shop building custom cabinets. He continued his apprenticeship mostly under his father’s tutelage before eventually branching out and overseeing projects for various remodel firms in San Diego. In 2005, John obtained his own license. By 2008, having completed graduate school in archaeology and historic preservation, followed by post graduate studies in environment and design, he returned to San Diego to focus on solely on designing and building better indoor and outdoor living spaces. John has completed many successful projects throughout San Diego County including the Mt. Helix area, La Mesa, El Cajon, Chula Vista, Coronado, La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach and greater East County. John enjoys the challenges that come with each project and works closely with clients to meet their needs while creating spaces that are rejuvenating, sustainable and inspiring.
Dave Simmons ca. 2000. Dave has been building homes throughout San Diego since the 1970’s. In the early 1980’s Dave made the decision to focus near exclusively finish carpentry, specializing in custom doors and windows. During this time, he Sunwood Company and evolved to become one San Diego’s largest door and window manufacturers and installation outfits providing finish carpentry services to both multi-scalar developers(McMillan, Pardee, Kaufmann and Broad), as well as custom home builders and clients desiring one-of-a-kind doors and windows and other carpentry. Dave continues to build custom entry doors, windows, roll up wood garage doors and just about anything that involves custom woodworking.
Cliff Simmons ca. 1950. Cliff Simmons began his apprenticehsip in upstate New York where he eventually promoted to supernintendant. He later moved to Arizona and subsequently, San Diego building numerous custom homes and performing remodel work. A craftsman in his own right, he was also a general contractor licensed in both Arizona and California and cabinet maker. He was owner/operator of Olsen-Simmons in San Diego for over 30 years before retiring, during which time he built for many San Diego notables such as Doug Manchester and Sandor Shapery
Alex Young, John’s great grandfather (shown at right) was born and lived in Scotland’s famous Clyde River ship building region. Alex was a member of the elite Black Watch Battalion. This training coupled with his inherent abilities in wood working made him a highly sought after craftsman and licensed shipwirght (ship builder/carpenter). He helped build various ships and churches in the region before retiring to the US. Alex worked in a time when you made most of your tools by hand and carpenters wore suits to work (talk about pride!). All his work was handmade and exquisite- a philiosophy he maintained till retirement. He even shunned John’s grandfather for buying the newly introduced ‘power’ skilsaws. A true perfectionist, his dedication to his trade and unwillingness to compromise when it comes to quality is a defining characteristic of the Simmons building legacy.
