The Simmons Building Legacy
Our building legacy began with Alex Young, my great grandfather. Alex was born and raised in the famous ship building region of the Clyde River. A licensed shipwright (ship builder) and carpenter Alex worked in a time when pride of craftsmanship was the rule, not the exception. Making his own tools by hand, everything Alex did was precise and by hand. His pride and attention to detail became the bar for his son-in-law Cliff Simmons. Cliff plied his trade in upstate New York before relocating to Arizona and subsequently California. Cliff built many homes in both regions and established Olsen-Simmons Inc. General Contractors in San Diego where he eventually retired. I was fortunate enough to work with him and was bedazzled by his work ethic and sense of duty.
Cliff’s sons, Dave and Jack Simmons were also taught the family business, Jack specializing in cabinetry and Dave in building custom homes and remodels. Dave eventually broke off from the trio to form Simmons Construction- Home Builders and then later, Sunwood Company, and manufacturing and installing high end and builders grade doors and windows. Sunwood Company eventually became one of southern California’s best known door and trim contractors.
My story begins as a toddler-adolescent visiting my father’s jobs where I would jump from the truck and start building things onsite with chunks of framing lumber and anything I could get my hands on. By age thirteen, I was on the payroll making doors and closet systems in the shop. By 19, I was securing my own cabinet and door contracts. In 2005, having plied my tried and completing graduate school, I obtained my own contractors licensed and began building my business, returning to school once more to study environmental psychology and design at the post-graduate level.
To date, JD Simmons Design & Construction has designed and orchestrated many successful projects throughout Greater San Diego including the Mt. Helix area, La Mesa, Chula Vista, South Park-Burlingame, Normal Heights, Coronado, La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach to name but a few. We enjoy the challenges that come with each project and work closely with clients to meet their needs while simultaneously creating spaces that are rejuvenating, sustainable and architecturally inspiring.
